  • The statistics reported by GAP indicate there was a 9% increase in the domestic market and a 20% growth in the international market in 2014 when compared to 2013.

There are still two months to go before the end of the year and according to the official report by the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) there was an increase of 174,120 from January through October of this year compared to the same period of time in 2013.

A total of 1,225,565 tourists has arrived at the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport during the first ten months of the year while, in 2013, there were a total of 1,051,445.

The majority of the tourists were from international destinations; their number grew from 686,718 in 2013 to 827,246 in 2014, a difference of 140,528 or a 20% increase.

The domestic market has also responded with 33,592 more tourists in 2014 than there were in 2013, representing an increase of 9%.

The target number of visitors to be recovered in 2014 established by the Vallarta-Nayarit Joint Promotion Committee was 100 thousand tourists, a number that was surpassed and may even be doubled by the end of the year, as there are still the visitors from November and December totally.

If one considers that November is the official start of the high season and the cold weather settles in north of the border during the month of December, it stands to reason the US and Canadian market will head south—all of which bodes very well for the destination.

These excellent numbers are a reflection of the joint effort put forth by the governments of Nayarit and Jalisco, together with the destinations of Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit all under the aegis of the Federal Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR) and the Mexico Tourism Board (MTB).

Wholesaler Delta/MLT Vacations was also on the agenda; this company does not have direct flights, however, they widely promote the region via connecting flights.

The event was a complete success. As part of the traditional incentives handed out to agents for their attendance and support, both Apple and Funjet raffled off two free tickets on the new flight along with accommodations in hotels, one in the Riviera Nayarit and the other in Puerto Vallarta.

Thirty-two hotels from the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta participated in interactive presentations held in Monterrey, Distrito Federal, Puebla and Guadalajara.

Promotional seminars held in Mexico by the Riviera Nayarit and the Puerto Vallarta convention and visitors bureaus with a new format called ¿Adivina qué? or Guess what?, have already trained 420 travel agents during the month of May.

The agents thoroughly enjoyed themselves while they soaked up information on both destinations. The events were very well received.

The recently concluded tour included Monterrey on the 19th, Mexico City on the 26th, Puebla on the 27th and, finally, Guadalajara on the 29th of May.

These trainings took place with the collaboration of 32 hotels from the destinations: 14 from the Riviera Nayarit and 18 from Puerto Vallarta.

The events began with a trade show where each of the participating hotels had the opportunity to share information with the attending agents about its property (or properties). Afterwards, both destinations held a dinner and a joint presentation.

The answers to the game questions were all contained in the information the agents picked up during the trade show. They competed against each other for the highest scores, vying for prizes including stays at hotels in both destinations.

According to the poll numbers from the Riviera Nayarit CVB regarding the main states within the Riviera Nayarit’s domestic market, Jalisco occupies first place with Mexico City in third, Nuevo León in sixth and Puebla taking seventh place.

This was the driving force behind the visits to the capital cities of these states—including the capital of the Republic—in order to best promote the destinations’ attractions to markets that have already responded favorably with sales.

Thus the domestic travel agents received the necessary updates and new information on the destinations, not to mention the exposure received by the hotels located in the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta.

The first joint promotional tour to Brazil by the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta convention and visitors bureaus concluded recently, resulting in the training of 300 Brazilian agents on the Vallarta-Nayarit campaign.

From August 18-21, the cities of Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro were treated to a trade show with hotels and operators, where the trav el agents with the best profile for selling Vallarta-Nayarit were informed about our destination’s products.

Both Diana Lorena Pomar, Director of the Mexico Tourism Bureau (MTB) in Brazil, and Aeromexico Airlines participated in the organization and development of this tour.

Flot, Visual Turismo, Agaxtur, MMT Gapnet, ADV Tours, New Age, Nascimento and Flytour were among the participating tour operators. They handed out flyers with pre-made packages to Vallarta-Nayarit, and it was noted they had all of the products ready for sale.

Representatives from the Hard Rock Hotel, Royal Decameron, AM Resorts, Velas Resorts, Belair, Marival Group, Sheraton, Barcelo, Canto del Sol, St Regis, Crown Paradise and Fiesta Americana were also present.

The response of the travel agents to these new offers was very positive; they were interested in the product and were very engaged during the training, which included a dynamic presentation with plenty of interaction with the agents, who asked questions about the different presentations.

Several very attractive shared stays were raffled among the agents, which included three nights in Puerto Vallarta and three more in the Riviera Nayarit; there were approximately four similar comps raffled per event. There was also a grand prize that included round-trip airfare on Aeroméxico.
