Join us in Yelapa for a weekend of conscious cinema, sustainability, and community engagement at the Festival de Cine Consciente with films by Mexican and international filmmakers.
Friday night (May 17th), Museo Yelapa welcomed a diverse group of filmmakers from around the world for the Festival de Cine Consciente. The evening began with a vibrant welcome dinner at Sirena Morena, where guests were introduced to the festival's theme, "Agua es Vida" (Water is Life). Tatiana Alexandra, a key organizer, emphasized the importance of conservation and sustainability in this year's event and touched on the developing water project in Yelapa. After the dinner, the group went to TARASANA for a tea ceremony, ending the special welcoming ceremonies on a high note. The night was filled with engaging conversations in multiple languages and gratitude for this weekend’s festival.
The Festival de Cine Consciente, now in its 4th edition, has a mission to use the power of cinema to address socio-environmental issues. Previous editions have been held in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Cancun. Through thought-provoking films and discussions, the festival aims to inspire immediate solutions and spark positive change for the “socio-environmental issues that affect everyone”. This year, the festival will take place in Yelapa, Jalisco on May 18th-19th, 2024, under the name "Festival de Cine Consciente Yelapa (FCCY)”.
In addition to film screenings and discussions, the Yelapa community is launching a water council to improve water management practices. Another key organizer, Damiana Villarello, stresses the importance of involving the community in sustainable initiatives and starting these kinds of movements at home. She said that while the festival is open to the public outside of Yelapa and they are happy to receive the general public, their main focus for the festival this year is getting the local Yelapa community involved. This year’s festival promises to be an unforgettable experience, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Santuario Yelapa in the lush jungle of the area.
In addition to showing these conscious films and hosting conversations to ground in to the themes of the films, the Yelapa community is also forming a water council to be able to manage and make a difference in the management of the water in Yelapa through a conscious and intentional community effort. Damiana Villarello, one of the organizers, emphasized the importance of starting any movement at home. She said that while the festival is open to the public outside of Yelapa and they are happy to receive the general public, their main focus for the festival this year is getting the local Yelapa community involved. The programming is incredible and anyone who has the opportunity to be part of this year’s festival will likely remember it for life. Santuario Yelapa where the festival is being held is a gorgeous space nestled in the jungle of Yelapa, slightly removed from the popular beach.
The festival schedule includes a diverse range of activities, from cacao circles to eco workshops and film screenings. Participants can expect engaging conversations on topics such as indigenous pride, environmental activism, and cultural identity. The festival aims to empower attendees to take immediate action towards a more sustainable future.
